For years, Tesla has been the undisputed truck of the California -growing electric vehicle market. He dominated the sales graphics, crushed competition and made EV in the Golden State. But 2024 told a slightly different story. While Tesla still leads the pack by a huge margin, its sales fell 12% compared to the year, even if the overall sales EV and Phev increased. It is now five consecutive quarters of decline for Tesla in its domestic lawn.

Last year, a total of 203,221 new Tesla models were sold in California. This represents a drop of 11.6% compared to the 230,010 units it delivered in 2023. This slide resulted in the drop in Tesla’s share on the zero emission vehicle market (ZEV) of the State of 60 , 1%to 52.5%, a drop of 7.6%. Meanwhile, almost all the other major car manufacturers have managed to increase its teethilation for electric vehicles.

Tesla always reigns supreme

Despite the drop in sales, Tesla remains the dominant force on the California ZEV market. Of course, its market share has slipped, but it always represents more than half of all ZEV sales. Its nearest competitor, Hyundai, brought its market share from 4.4% to 5.9% with 22,718 units sold, exceeding Chevrolet, which saw its share fall from 5% to 3.8% with 14 553 units. In fact, Chevy fell in sixth place, exceeded by luxury brands like BMW (18,664 units, up 29%) and Mercedes (17,369 units, up 10.5%).

Kia posted a 74.1% increase in ZEV sales, reaching 13,943 units, while Cadillac experienced an impressive leap of 296.9% – largely thanks to the Lyriq – having reached 5,235 units. Volkswagen, on the other hand, took a nose, sales that have dropped from 55.6% to 5,440 deliveries.

Last year, the Tesla Model Yy also remained comfortable, with 128,923 registrations. This positioned it well before the Tesla Model 3 with 53,056 inscriptions and the nearest product product, the Hyundai Ioniq 5, with 16,879 units sold.

The model was also the best -selling car last year, regardless of the powertrain. The Toyota Rav4 was in second place, with 65,041 registrations recorded throughout the year. This positioned it slightly in front of the Toyota Camry with 55,027 sales and the Honda Civic with 53,049 units sold, just six less than the Tesla Model 3.
