For most Americans, the Mitsubishi Triton van may seem a bit of a quirk. In the United States, Mitsubishi is best known for its SUV collection and the tailgate mirage and the sedan. However, in many other world markets, the triton which is also known as L200 in some regions, is one of the most important and popular models of the brand, playing a crucial role in global programming of Mitsubishi.
The story of Mitsubishi with microphones dates back to the late 1970s, and since then they have deployed six generations of Triton. We first took the steering wheel of the fifth generation model in its liftere form in mid-2019 and were really impressed. But it did not take long for the Triton to start to feel obsolete, in particular with the arrival of the third generation Isuzu D and the brand new Ford Ranger.

For years, Mitsubishi desperately needed a new triton, and in 2024, the brand new model finally arrived in Australia. We had the chance to spend a week with her in the flagship garnish GSR, and fortunately, it looks like a substantial upgrade compared to the old version. That said, it’s not without defects.

Utes Down Under: The difficult triton competition
Middle size vans like The Triton are a large company in Australia, where they are known as Utes. The year, the Ford Ranger took first place as a new best -selling vehicle, followed by the Toyota Rav4 , Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max. It is three microphones in the first four. Same engine, best performance
Unlike the Ford Ranger, which is offered with a handful of different engines, all Triton models are sold with the same four -cylinder unit. It is a 2.4-liter double turbo diesel unit with 201 CH (150 kW) and 347 LB-PI (470 Nm) of torque associated with a six-speed automatic transmission. Although the most basic version is only with rear traction, all other Triton models have 4-wheel drive, including the GSR, which is equipped with the 4-wheel drive system of Mitsubishi 4WD-II which includes seven driving modes in single terrain .

Some can hate the appearance of the new triton, while others may like it. No matter what you feel, there is no doubt that he draws attention to the road, especially in bright orange as our test car. During my time with it, I had a gentleman approaching me and compliment myself – something that rarely happens unless I drive an expensive sports car. Obviously, it is the attention of the inhabitants.

Welcome interior upgrades
The cabin of the new Triton is robust, robust and well equipped, but it does not feel as modern as some of its competitors. An upgrade of the keys is the assembly of a 9.0 -inch infotainment screen that has an Apple Carplay without wireless and Android Auto Android Wired (Shame).
As with some other Mitsubishi models, the graphics and the user interface of the infotainment system are horribly obsolete. The touch screen is also slow enough to respond to entries. Fortunately, there is a physical volume button, something that was missing on the previous generation model. There are also practical buttons used as a shortcut for the system.
Elsewhere, there is a semi-digital gauge cluster with a central screen and two traditional gauges. The screen can be configured to display all the critical driving information, but does not correspond to the entirely digital cluster that you will find in the Ford Ranger.

A mixture of black leather and black plastics dominated the cabin of our tester. One of the most pleasant keys was the orange contrast seam and the false carbon fiber on the doors. Unfortunately, there was also an abundance of black piano plastic on the transmission tunnel and those around the door handle. On a positive level, there are a lot of storage cubbies at the front, including a large area in the dashboard on the passenger side. A pair of hidden cup holders is also on the dashboard, located to the right of the steering wheel and to the left of the glove box.

While the triton is on a massive wheelbase of 3,130 mm (123.2 inches), it is not surprising that the interior room is more than sufficient. Not only are there a lot of space at the front, but there is also a lot of space in the back. A small disappointment is the fact that the front passenger seat offers only manual adjustments, although it is the high -end model.
The bed offers a lot of space and some attachment points. Unfortunately, there are no power outlets. The GSR has a nominal payload of 1,030 kg (2,270 lb) – a heavy gain on the 855 kg (1,884 lb) of the old model. The brake towing has also increased from 3,100 kg (6,834 lb) to 3,500 kg (7,716 lb). The vehicle we tested was also equipped with a towing bar and a Redarc electronic brake controller (an option at $ 850 / $ 522).

Sensitive improvement in road ways
On the open road, the Triton GSR 2024 combines the driving and comfort of an SUV with the versatility of a pick-up that its predecessor could not quite match.
The first part – and perhaps the most impressive – of the driving experience is the journey. The microphones with leafy springs on the back like this generally have hard rides that are only softened once you have loaded the bed with a lot of weight. The old Triton was roughly the same. This is not the case here. In one way or another, Mitsubishi has been able to develop the suspension in such a way that the back remains soft and subtle on the bumps, which makes people driving daily.
The engine also looks like a solid upgrade on the old model. Puncling an additional torque of 23 hp (17 kW) and 29 lb-pi (40 Nm), the Diesel with double turbo of 2.4 liters feels much more lively than before, giving the triton a lot of rise and obliged account . The engine is also relatively refined and exempt from severe vibrations and a domineering and rotal diesel soundtrack.
Mitsubishi claims that the Triton GSR can sip an impressive 7.7 l / 100 km (equal to 30.5 MPG American) on the combined cycle, but we could not get closer to this and on average 10.1 l / 100 km (23.2 American MPG) for on average 10.1 l / 100 km (23.2 American MPG) during a mixture of road and urban driving.

As mentioned, the GSR is equipped with the 4WD-II system for the super selection of the automaker which includes a torsen central differential. We only had the opportunity to do some all-terrain with the Triton, but we found that he was sure and more than capable of conquering the most hassle-free land. It can be drawn into a rear traction, 4 -wheel drive full -time, 4HLC where the central differs are locked, and 4LLC where the low -speed central differs is locked. There are also normal driving modes, eco, gravel, snow, mud, sand and rock.
Safety technology is not up to
Many important safety features are standard throughout the range. These include transversal traffic alert, prevention of the start of the way with emergency aid, traffic recognition, adaptive cruise control, attenuation of collisions to the front and a conductive monitoring system. The latter includes a camera behind the steering wheel and is a little dominating sometimes, telling you that you are distracted or sleeping even if you are not. An element of technology in particular absent is any type of active track support assistance, which is a shame.
The Sorton Autonomous Emergency Braking System (AEB) also leaves much to be desired. On the photo below, broken near my house, you will notice several cars on the side of the road around a right turn. It is not uncommon for the cars I test to get me from these parked cars, suspecting that I am about to put them back. Usually, the AEB system of a vehicle will realize that cars are on another path. Not in the triton. While sailing around this curve during my week with the Mitsubishi, the AEB briefly struck the brakes several times. It was exasperating, if not dangerous at the limit.

A wide range of accessories is available from the factory. These include a bull bar of $ 3,700 in (~ $ 2,300), a boost bar of $ 1,300 in (~ $ 800), $ 1,295 in (~ $ 800) LightForce Lamps , a protective cane of $ 1,750 in (~ $ 1,100), a lateral canopy of $ 4,800 (~ $ 3,000) and an electric tonnes of $ 4,400 in (~ $ 2,700).
Verdict
One of the key calls for the new Triton is its guarantee. In Australia, it is delivered as standard with a five -year warranty of 100,000 km (62,000 miles), but this can be extended to 10 years / 200,000 km (124,000 miles) if you agree to have it maintained a Mitsubishi dealer every year for the first 10 years.
All in all, the Mitsubishi Triton GSR 2024 is a convincing option at the price. Yes, the cabin does not feel as modern as some of its competitors, and it is missing on the technology front, but it nails the key areas necessary to make it a convincing daily driver who is also ready for the adventures of Week- tortuous end.
