- Toyota Motor Corporation recently laid a brand for the GR Celica signage plate in Brazil.
- The company officials confirmed Celica’s return to programming in the near future.
- The model will likely include a new 2.0 -liter turbocharged engine, producing up to 400 hp.
Toyota confirmed that the Celica signage plate made a return, which should be sold alongside the new generation GR 86. Now, a newly discovered brand deposit suggests that the revival model will be called the GR Celica, by attacking it with Toyota’s performance, focused on Toyota’s performance. GR range.
The brand was filed by Toyota Motor Corporation to the National Institute of Brazil of Industrial Property and the Ministry of the Economy, with a date of request of January 15 and a date of February 4. Unfortunately, beyond the name, the deposit does not offer any new details about the next eighth generation sports car.
A global launch? Maybe
Toyota securing the brand in Brazil suggests that GR Celica could be sold in South America alongside key markets like Japan and Europe. However, its availability will ultimately depend on the wider Toyota strategy and the question of whether the car’s powertrain of the car respects regional regulations on emissions – which remain unclear at this stage.

The return of the Celica has been strongly rumoring for years, despite the fact that the seventh generation model was interrupted until 2006 without direct successor. Toyota finally put speculation at rest in November 2024 when vice-president Yuki Nakajima confirmed during a public event in Japan:
“We do Celica.”

A 400 -horsepower turbo AWD coupe?
The new 2.0 -liter turbocharged 2.0 -liter engine of Toyota, currently in development, seems to be a solid candidate for the GR Celica. The reports suggest that it could produce up to 400 hp (298 kW / 406 PS) in the form of road. If this is the case, the motorcycle group would probably be associated with AWD, possibly incorporating the GR-Her system into rally of hot hatches Gr Yaris and Gr Corolla.
Front or traditional engine arrangement with front or traditional motor?
Historically, the seven generations of the Celica sold between 1970 and 2006 presented an engine mounted on the front. Logic suggests that the new model will follow suit, but Japan’s recent reports say that GR Celica could rather adopt a layout of the average engine. This speculation gained ground after Toyota presented a GR Yaris prototype with an average motor show at Tokyo, initially believed in the preview of the next MR2.
Japanese publication Best car Recently suggested that Celica and MR2 successors are actually the same car. Although it would make sense to a R&D perspective and cost sharing, this contradicts a previous commentary by a Gazoo Racing pilot teasing a “mr-something”.
Plus: Toyota alludes to the sports car “mr-something” with 2.0 turbo and awd
In addition, an anterior teaser of the Toyota Gip animated series included both the eighth generation Celica and the fourth generation MR2 as part of the brand’s future GR range. However, Toyota officials have not yet confirmed the provision of the new Celica motorcycle group, leaving the possibility that it can share development with MR2.
Without an official launch date for the latest addition of the GR range of Toyota, we will have to wait more details later this year. Meanwhile, the GR Yaris M concept should make its race debut at the Super Taikyu series in July 2025, while Toyota continues to develop its central motor platform.
