- The last motorcycle group will arrive after 2026 and will be used in many vehicles.
Electric vehicles gain popularity, but a handful of car manufacturers continue to invest in fuel cell vehicles. Toyota is one of their greatest supporters and the company published the first details on their third -generation fuel cell system.
Taking place at the international exhibition of hydrogen and fuel cells in Tokyo on February 19, the system of third generation fuel cells of the company promises to be a major step. The automaker also promises reductions in “significant costs” thanks to “innovations in cell design and manufacturing processes”.
Plus: BMW and Toyota expand their partnership to save hydrogen cars
In addition to being more affordable, the latest Toyota fuel cell system promises to be twice as durable. In fact, the company claims that its third generation system has a sustainability comparable to a diesel engine.
Engineers also focused on improving energy efficiency, which leads to a 20% increase in the “cruise range”. While the current mirai can travel 402 miles (647 km) between stops, hydrogen prices in California have skyrocketed to record the summits last year. This means that any increase in energy efficiency would be welcome development.
We will probably learn more next week, but Toyota said that the third -generation fuel cell system can be installed in passenger cars, commercial vehicles, ships, trains and stationary generators. It should arrive after 2026 and will be offered in North America, Europe, China and Japan.
Since the launch of the Mirai in 2014, Toyota has sold around 28,000 units worldwide. The company’s fuel cell system has also been used in more than 2,700 other applications ranging from buses to generators.
