  • The Land Cruiser was named the most stolen vehicle in Japan.
  • The robust SUV dominated the list for the fourth consecutive year in 2024.
  • The Toyota and Lexus models occupied each place in the top 10.

Toyota is used to marking many places in the vehicle league tables, whether sales, reliability or the number of years that a model will survive before succumbing to the crusher. And this week, the automaker dominated a table, it took each of the 10 places. But on this occasion, Toyota will not celebrate, because the list is the most stolen vehicles in Japan.

The Japan General Insurance Association collects data on car flights every year since 2000 and between them, Toyota and Lexus have locked the first 10 places in the 2024 study. But there is a model whose thieves can really not have enough.

This model is the Land Cruiser (and Prado), which exceeded the graph for the fourth consecutive year, although theft incidents have jumped considerably in the 12 months to the end of December. While Land Cruisers represented 14.7 vehicles stolen out of 100 in Table 2023, the figure increased to 27.5 in 2024. This meant more than one car in four volley was a Land Cruiser.

The first four vehicles on the list maintained their position of the previous study. After the Land Cruiser came the Alphard Mini-Pourgonnette, the Prius and the Lexus LX (a posh Land Cruiser), all representing proportions of theft of vehicles much smaller than the Big Toyota SUV.

Another Lexus, the RX, occupied fifth place, followed by the Toyota Crown, the Mini-Pourgonnettes de Hiace and Velfire, the Lexus Lsus LS and the Toyota Voxy mini-dinner. But the number of flight cases at this end of the table seems tiny next to those at the top. Nearly 670 terrestrial cruisers were stolen (compared to 383 in 2023) against only 21 Voxys. The Land Cruiser flight epidemic has contributed to increasing the total number of vehicle flights to 2,499.

The average payments of insurers also increased by around 20% to ¥ 2,815,000 ($ 18,700), after staying at a level enough between 2022 and 2023. And the place where you are most likely to fly a car? It would be the Aichi prefecture, which represented more than a fifth of all flights and is certainly not the best location for anyone who plans to obtain a Land Cruiser.
