  • The owners continue Jeep, saying that underground fires reduce the value of their vehicles.
  • They argue that they would not have bought their jeeps if they had known the problem.
  • NHTSA is investigating about 781,000 jeeps for potential fire risks.

Car fires are frightening enough after an accident, now imagine your parked vehicle increase in flames a few hours later. This is the problem that the owners of Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator of 2021-2023 are reported, which prompted a national survey on the National Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on 781,459 vehicles. While regulators strive to determine if a defect is to be blamed, some owners do not wait and continue the Jeep.

More specifically, the trial reduces four key violations: violation of the implicit guarantee, violation of the law on fraud to Illinois consumers, unfair enrichment and violation of the Magnuson-Moss guarantee law. The complainants stress that the Survey Defect Bureau (ODI) has linked these vehicle fires to at least one death.

Fires, prosecution and an invoice of $ 60,000

They also cite examples of vehicles in the affected population that apparently randomly set fire. In at least one case, a car would have caught fire some six hours after the owner parked and extinguished it. The Jeep burned on the ground in this case, according to the complainants.

The trial mentions several other examples of fires under the hood, one of which seems even wilder:

“At the beginning of the afternoon of July 5, 2024, our Gladiator Rubicon Jeep 2022 with only 18,000 miles was spontaneously burned in our alley after being parked there for a little less than 24 hours. By working in the courtyard, my husband noticed thick black smoke from the engine.

“The smoke quickly turned into flames, then quickly intensified when it spread into the engine, the cabin, then finally the whole Jeep. The jeep was a total and complete loss with Jeep claiming no responsibility. We have more than $ 60,000 in damages at our home, the aisle, the landscaping and the ground (PFAS) of the fire, without including the Jeep itself. »»

It is a fairly unpleasant situation. He argues that they have all undergone quantifiable economic losses. This particular line could be difficult to prove, but it will be for lawyers in the case.

In particular, this is not the only collective recourse against Jeep for the same problem. In January, the owners of Michigan launched a very similar legal action. Interestingly, it also includes 2024 Wranglers and 2022-2024 Grand Cherokees. Nevertheless, if the NHTSA arrives at a conclusion on its investigation, it could play a role in the outcome of these proceedings.
