- VW invests $ 5.8 billion in a partnership with Rivian to use its electrical architecture.
- The fully electric golf will be the group’s flexible SSP platform with 800 volt technology.
- The new model will be built in Germany, the production of ice golf will be transferred to Mexico.
We are only a few years old from the VW Golf of new generation, and it has been confirmed that it will use the TRICK VW CODEVANTE software architecture with RIVIAN. The new golf course is expected to be launched in 2029 and, as always, it will be a very important model for the brand, offered exclusively as the VE and sold alongside the current MK8 Golf.
The VW group has started $ 5.8 billion in its partnership with Rivian, co-development of a new electrical architecture to be used by future models of the two car manufacturers. The new architecture will consolidate the complexity of current VW systems and considerably reduce the number of necessary control units. It also uses zonal architecture, offering VW additional flexibility.

The first VW model to use the new architecture will be the electric ID.1, and the Golf MK9 will follow, potentially nicknamed the ID. Golf. According to the technical chief of VW, Kai Grünitz, starting with the ID.1 “reduces the risk of golf”, because the brand’s EV base will have less functionalities than golf, allowing VW to iron the folds. Live updates will serve as an important characteristic of architecture.
“The advantage of zonal architecture is that I can put one, two or three areas in a vehicle,” Grünitz told Autocar. “Vehicles in lower price segments will need a single area, while a premium vehicle may need three or four, depending on the functions. I can use a dedicated family system on a chip (SOC) for each model. So, for ID 1, I can use an SOC with a lower price and complexity, but if I take the same architecture in the golf course, I can use a different SoC which costs more money but gives additional functions. But it’s always the same software. »»
The new generation VW Golf Golf will be the group’s flexible SSP platform with an architecture of 800 volts. He will also use a new battery design of pack cells.
VW will build the new golf course in its factory in Wolfsburg, Germany, while moving the production of the current MK8 Golf far from its homeland and a Puebla factory, Mexico.
