  • China leads the charge with a 35% increase in sales in the first two months of the year.
  • Sales have also strongly rebounded in the main European markets such as Germany and the United Kingdom.
  • US EV and PHEV sales also increased in January and February.

The electrified vehicle market is clearly on an ascending trajectory, sales reaching new heights in the first two months of 2025. Although electric vehicles and PHEVs still represent a smaller part of the total car sales on the main world markets, growth is undeniable.

According to data from HumomotionThe first two months of 2025 saw a combined total of 2.4 million electric vehicles and the PHEV sold worldwide, marking an increase of 30% compared to the same period last year. Unsurprisingly, China leads this charge, with sales of electrified vehicles that light up with an impressive 35%, reaching 1.4 million units.

Using China, data show that sales jumped 76% in February compared to the same month of last year. However, the comparison from February 2025 to February 2024 is not ideal, because the Chinese New Year dropped in mid-February from last year, but was at the start of the month of this year. Nevertheless, sales in January and February show that BEV sales increased by 46% while PHEV sales increased by 22%.

Significant growth has also been reported in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Sales here is up 20% for the start of the year. In Mexico, sales have more than doubled thanks to the arrival of new Chinese electric vehicles, while in the United States, sales of electric vehicles and PHEV increased by 28%. A possible explanation for the United States is that buyers rush to buy an electric vehicle before the $ 7,500 Federal Tax Credit is potentially rebuilt.

European growth

Europe also see solid numbers, with sales of electric vehicles 29% compared to last year. However, PHEV growth in the region has been more modest, increasing only 2%. In particular, PHEV sales in France have made a strong dive (down 48%) after the government has introduced a weight on the weight on rechargeable hybrids.

“It was a good start of the year for sales of electric vehicles worldwide with a bump of 50% in February compared to the previous year,” said Rhomotion data manager Charles Lester. “A large part of the growth continues to come from China which sees a pure electrical rebirth this year compared to the history of hybrid love of 2024. Despite high prices, their national brand, byd, shows no sign of slowdown in their home and international expansion.”
