Mercedes has just launched the third generation of the CLA, offering a choice between EV and Hybrid PowerTrains. However, there are bad news for class A fans: brand technology director Markus Schafer confirmed that the elegant compact sedan will not be followed by a new class.

Rumors about the death of class A after the end of the current generation life cycle has been circulating since 2022, and now we have official confirmation. During the presentation of the New CLA, Schafer revealed that Mercedes will not develop a successor of their only offer in Heise and explained why.

The end of an era for class A

Last year, it was reported that class A current will remain until 2026 before losing out of production. The four generations of the entry-level Mercedes were introduced respectively in 1997, 2004, 2012 and 2018. The first two participated in the supermini segment with a large proportion of bodies and mini-dinner, while the third and fourth generation models adopted a more conventional style of bodyback with a greater imprint.

Class A was interrupted from the United States and Canada after the end of 2022, but remains on sale on other markets, including Europe, after having benefited from an update in mid-life. The future end of the model also marks the conclusion of the A45 AMG hot hatch.

A different platform for class G

The new CLA is built on MMA architecture, which also underlies the next GLA and GLB SUVs. However, the baby’s G class will take a different route to maintain its robust character and ready on the road. Talk to QuattroruoteSchafer confirmed that the baby G-Class will not share the same platform: “The baby G will not be born on the MMA, because if we had used the new platform, we could not have guaranteed it the off-road capacities that a class G should have.”

“We use the modules available for the maximum of sharing possibilities, from the powertrain of software to software, but for the baby G, we will make a specific base – the MMA would not allow us to set up the wheels of the diameter necessary for a model of this type, nor to give it the necessary soil clearance”.

Mercedes also confirmed that the baby G-Class will adopt a tiny “G” for his name. A Teaser of February 2025 suggests that the model will have a compact imprint, a generous floor clearance and a square shape recalling the original G-Wagen of 1979.
