New York had it with plaque cheaters. From next month, anyone who deliberately obscures his license plate, or even simply allows his car to get dirty that the plate cannot be read, risks a fine of $ 50. So if you have tried to thwart the system by letting your car become dirty or even covering your plate, it’s time to rethink this strategy.
NYC has adopted this week a new set of rules concerning the visibility of plates which become operational from April 16 in part to master the problem of speeders and toll skippers. The two groups have obscured their registration plates in recent years to escape fines and costs by preventing cameras from correctly identifying their vehicles.

Last year, we pointed out that Speeders had avoided more than $ 100 million in tickets, and in 2023, we covered a story in New York entering 44 cars for jumping $ 1 million in tolls, including a Range Rover whose driver owed $ 52,000 to the city.
The new rules require the cars to carry the registration plates attached before and rear properly positioned between 12 and 48 inches (305-1 220 mm) on the ground. They must be readable and not masked by anything, including glass or plastic blankets. The cars outside the condition are good with a rear plate if it is correct for their domestic lawn.
False or modified plates are obviously prohibited, but the same goes for car covers for parked vehicles which prevent official access to the license plate, recording and wine sticker. This could wrap some drivers who have multiple cars, perhaps older or classic, which, if parked, do not escape fines or toll costs.

“Drivers who obscure their registration plates are not content to break the law – they put everyone in danger,” said Dot Dot Ydanis Rodriguez, the repression.
“It has been proven that the automated camera application reduced the speed and decline in pedestrian deaths, but that can only work if the plates are visible, which is why these reinforced rules are essential to hold responsible offenders and protect all New Yorkers.”
Do you agree with these new rules, and do you think that a tiny fine of $ 50 will be sufficient to prevent drivers from obtaining their plates?
