The Specialty Equipment Market Association, better known as SEMA, has taken support of a bill in Texas to protect the import and registration of Japanese Kei cars in the state. This means that these beloved miniature vehicles would be protected in Lone Star Star laws.
The SB 1816 bill, recently presented by the state senator, Kelly Hancock, is on the back of an effort that has already prompted Texas DMV to overthrow its prohibition to weave Kei cars. As with each car originally not proposed on the American market, eligible Kei models must be at least 25 years old when imported in the United States and having an engine less than 1,200 CC.

Local legislation also determines that a Kei car is less than 140 inches long, 60 inches wide and 80 inches high, while having a top speed of at least 50 mph. They must also be equipped with a speedometer, headlights, rear lights, indicators, a parking brake, a mirror and wipers.
Lone Star Kei, a local advocacy group that has pushed the laws to protect KEI cars, says that the bill is an important step to ensure that these vehicles can be titled and registered in Texas.

The senior director of government affairs of the State in SEMA, Victor Munoz, by the support of the association behind the efforts of a letter addressed to Will Metcalf in the Chamber of Representatives of Texas.
In the letter, Munoz said that “this legislation is a thoughtful approach to recognize the growing interest in conventional and niche vehicles”, adding that it will provide “a clear and consistent process for securities and recording. The association has added that the bill will guarantee that these KEI cars meet local security standards and believe that the bill “will promote economic growth and the choice of consumers while maintaining security and regulatory standards”.
“These vehicles, often called” Kei cars “, are very popular for their compact size, effective design and unique cultural appeal,” adds the letter.
