- RAM’s financial director recognizes the need for a truck for the budget.
- The new affordable model could be a stripped version of the current 1500.
- It also works on a smaller collection to compete with the Chevy Colorado.
Last year, under the direction of Carlos Tavares, Stellantis made the controversial decision to kill the RAM 1500 Classic. This truck, based on the old 2008 version of the 1500, had been marketed as a more affordable alternative to new models. But, barely six months later, RAM’s financial director now admits that the brand desperately needs a new model to fill the gap left by its decision to chop the classic.

Speaking at a Wolfe research conference, Doug Ostermann admitted that there was a clear demand for a more favorable collection of a budget. The introduction of a model like this would mark a significant change for the RAM, because the brand tries to correct the courses after several decisions taken by Tavares, including the controversial abolition of the HEMI V8 engine, which, according to the reports, will make a return later this year.
Fill the gap left behind
“We have to introduce a kind of low-end garnish from the new pick-up to fill this gap (left by the classic 1500),” said Ostermann according to Bloomberg. Although he noted that such a model would not be “immediately”, there was no clarity on the chronology of his introduction.
Ram’s decision last year to kill the classic 1500 was expensive – not just in terms of fans’ indignation, but also in jobs. About 1,100 people lost their positions in the Warren truck assembly plant in Michigan. In 2024, RAM declared a 15% drop in collection sales in the United States, and it seems that they hope that a more affordable truck will help overthrow this trend.

What will the new collection look like?
The form exactly of this new affordable pick-up will always take in the air. Will he follow in the footsteps of the 1500 Classic, or will it be a stripped version of the current 1500? Only time will tell us.

In addition to that, RAM also develops a smaller model that could compete with medium -sized trucks like the Ford Ranger or Chevrolet Colorado. Alternatively, he could target the more compact or Hyundai Santa Cruz Ford Maverick. This truck could be based on a monocoque platform in Stellantis, in which case it would probably be built at the Belvidere assembly plant in Illinois.
