Despite the drop, a Hyundai model remained the most stolen vehicle in America
–>
- The number of car flights dropped by 17% last year to fall back to pre-countryic levels.
- 850,708 vehicles were stolen in the United States last year and California was a hot spot.
- The most stolen vehicle was the Hyundai Elantra and was closely followed by the Sonata.
The National Insurance Crime Bureau revealed that car flights fell to pre-pale levels after a wave motivated by lax security on Hyundai and Kia vehicles. This made a new national and prompted some insurers to lower or refuse coverage.
However, companies have solved the problem and this seems to have a significant impact because car flights dropped from 17% last year to 850,708 units. This is the highest annual decrease in the past 40 years and the decline has been so steep that the number of flights fell below 2020 levels.

Maine was the only state to undergo an increase in vehicle flights because the rate increased by 2%. The numbers have fallen everywhere else with huge Washington drops (-32%), Nevada (-31%), Oregon (-30%), Nebraska (-29%) and Colorado (-26%).
This is good news, but theft is always a problem, especially in Washington DC. The city had 842.4 flights per 100,000 residents, more than three times the national average of 250.2 flights.
American vehicle flights
The American capital was followed by the state of California, which had 463.21 flights per 100,000 residents. New Mexico, Colorado and Nevada completed the first five places.
As for the most stolen vehicles, no drum roll is necessary because Hyundai took the first two places. The Elantra left with questionable honor while 31,712 flights were reported in 2024. The Hyundai Sonata was not far behind with 26,720 flights and Kia also made a fifth place showing thanks to 17,493 stolen sedans.
The most stolen vehicles in 2024
This should serve another reminder to the owners of Hyundai and Kia to update their vehicles. As recycling, software upgrade prevents vehicles from starting without their keys. Although many customers have made the company’s offer, around four million Hyundai vehicles in the United States were not equipped with a push button or immobilization of anti-theft devices.
In general, one of the simplest things you can do to prevent theft does not leave the keys in your vehicle. This is common sense, but 57,096 vehicles were stolen in 2015 with the keys.
Other things you can do to dissuade thieves are the park in a garage or in a well -lit area. People must also lock their doors, close the windows and delete valuables.
