- Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum hopes that Trump will respect existing free trade agreements.
- In 2024, Mexico exported 3 million vehicles in the United States and $ 100 billion in car parts.
- The threat of sweeping 25% prices on Mexican products puts the country in a difficult situation.
The 25% tariffs that President Donald Trump wishes to impose against Mexico from April 2 could lead to the recession of neighbors in the southern United States. The huge sector of the manufacturing of Mexico car and car parts is a large part of the reason, which prompted President Claudia Sheinbaum to negotiate carefully with Trump rather than retaliation with reprisals as Canada did.
Mexico exported nearly 3 million vehicles to the United States last year and around $ 100 billion in automotive parts. The United States is extremely important for the Mexican economy and exports across the border represented 28% of the country’s gross domestic product. Aware that Mexico cannot respond to Trump in the same way as Canada, Sheinbaum has adopted a non -conflictual approach from Trump.

While speaking at a press conference earlier this month, Sheinbaum said: “We are going to do what is best for Mexico and are looking for a dialogue with the United States. So far – and I have to give credit to President Trump for this – he has been very respectful.” She added: “We have to wait until April 2 to see what happens for Mexico.”
Although the chief of Mexico does not want to start a trade war with Trump, he is not clear if and how she can convince him not to impose the prices. Sheinbaum hopes Trump will respect the existing United States-Mexico-Canal agreement, which provides free trade between the 3 countries and was signed during Trump’s first mandate.

According to the director of the Center for Us and Mexico City of Rice University, Tony Payan, Sheinbaum has no choice but to be patient with Trump. While she is committed to strengthening border security to reduce Fentanyl illegal traffic, Payan is not convinced that this alone will put Trump on his side. As part of its first American policies, Trump wishes to encourage manufacturers to move the production of their Mexico products in Canada.
“Trump is a tyrant. If you do not grow back, he is triumphant, and if you grow back, he punishes you even stronger,” Payan told Auto News. “The Canadians have chosen to grow back and Mexico chose the path of retirement and apuldent. And guess what? They are both under the same threat and in the same position. ”
