  • Toyota delays its Japanese battery factory due to the growth of SV demand slower than expected.
  • The delay of the Fukuoka battery factory could have an impact on its operational start date expected in 2028.
  • The next generation of EV Toyota could offer driving ranges up to 620 miles (1,000 km).

Toyota hits the brakes – slightly – one of its main EV infrastructure projects in Japan. While the company still plans to move forward with a new battery factory, the construction will not start as soon as originally. The break comes as Toyota adjusts its EV strategy.

The factory is planned for the Japanese prefecture of Fukuoka, and according to local governor Seitaro Hattori, an agreement on the exact location was to be finalized in April. This chronology has now slipped in the fall. The installation was to start operations in 2028, but the delay could also postpone this date.

Toyota is always determined to build the installation, Nikkei Asia Reports, but the company re -evaluates what will really be produced there. Initially, the factory was intended to make batteries for the next generation of Toyota electric vehicles, some of which target a range of up to 620 miles (1,000 kilometers).

The change reflects a broader recalibration of Toyota’s ambitions. While global sales of electric cars are still climbing, they do not accelerate as quickly as certain car manufacturers once projected. This discrepancy between forecasts and reality now encourages the company to rethink its objectives.

In 2022, Toyota announced that it was aimed at selling 1.5 million electric vehicles per year by 2026. This number was reduced to 1 million in 2023 and, more recently, reduced again to only 800,000 units. The company has abandoned electric vehicles by any section, it simply adjusted expectations in a market which turns out to be more complex and less predictable than initially suggested.

Earlier this month, Toyota has created a new Chinese subsidiary for Lexus which will develop and build electric vehicles and batteries in a China factory. The factory will be located in Shanghai and will manufacture several models exclusively for the Chinese market.
