The Citroen ZX may not be familiar to most people from North America, but if you are a fan of the compact Hayons of the 90s, you will recognize it as the precursor of Xsara and C4. However, there is a version of the ZX which is distinguished from your average suburban car: the Ralle Rallye ZX.

This Dakar winning beast has little in common with its road counterpart, based strongly on the expertise of Citroën-Peugeot motorsport. In fact, the ZX Rally Raid is essentially an advanced version of the Peugeot 405 Turbo 16 Turbo people 16, which itself traces its roots in the 205 T16 B group.

As expected from a Dakar competitor, the Rallye ZX rally is a completely different beast from its humble origins. The three -door ZX shell of the car is mounted on a personalized chassis, with bolted wing extensions to accommodate its much wider tracks. And with regard to the floor clearance, well, it will be ashamed of most jeep.

Characteristics such as the scoop mounted on the roof, the additional lights and vents, the oversized rear wing and the solid mud waves clearly show it – it is a rally monster. Inside, the car continues its approach without frills with two seats of Sparco Racing buckets and a dashboard crowded with a vertiginous fan of switches.

More importantly, the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine mounted on the middle offers between 300 and 330 hp (227-250 kW), depending on the configuration. The power supply is sent to four wheels via a manual gearbox with seven-speed, supported by self-greening differentials on the two axles and a limited sliding differential. To top it all, the conqueror beast of the dunes has an independent suspension with two springs on each wheel, ensuring that it can manage almost everything that the terrain launches.

A very successful career

The Citroen ZX Rallye Raid was introduced in 1990 and remained active until 1997. During this period, it won four Dakar titles (1991, 1994, 1995, 1996) and five FIA ​​World Cup titles for fundamental rallies (1993-1997). In total, the French rally car won 36 of the 42 races in which it entered, proving its superiority against its competitors. Drivers who were sitting behind its steering wheel include Ari Vatanen, Pierre Lartigue and Jacky Ickx.

This particular example of the Rallye Rallye (C05 chassis) participated in three Paris-Dakar rallies, ending in the sixth and seventh places. After his motorsport career, he became part of the Citroen heritage collection, until 2011, when he was sold to a private owner.

The model has undergone a restoration of two years, bringing it to the specifications of the 1990 pharaoh rally. Like the first versions of the ZX Rally Raid, it presents the iconic yellow livery with camel graphics, before finally switching to the red livery decorated with a total brand.

The ZX Rally Raid 1990 is sold with a complete history file, as well as two Citroen Sport racing costumes from the 1991 season, so you can feel like a pro.
