Lovers of classic trucks, take note: Isuzu has just dropped a concept of retro inspiration which proves that the old -fashioned charm always has a place in the modern automotive world. And they did it in style – by rekinding a favorite of fans of the late 80s with a touch more than deep skin.
It is called the Dragon Max and it is a lively RestoMod based on the 1988 intermediate size truck of the brand. This unique concept goes style with a new turbodiesel engine and an entirely modernized interior, giving the old platform a second life.

The dragon was the local nickname of the Isuzu TFR in Thailand, a model that carried many faces on the world markets. Depending on where you lived, this truck may have been incompetence as the fastest, the rodeo, the collection, the invader or even the Honda Ippon. He also appeared under the signage plates Opel, Vauxhall, Holden and Chevrolet. Originally launched in 1988, this generation remained until 2002, when it was finally replaced by the first generation Isuzu D-Max.
Retro looks, modern material
The Max Dragon retains the mainly intact TFR bodywork, but updates the visuals with a few key keys. The new LED headlights and the rear lights with a smoked finish give it a updated look, while a subtly lit grille and a matte paint firmly draw it in 2025. A rear spoiler adds a sporty edge, and black wheels of 17 inch combined with a revised suspension, lead everything in the Lowrider territory.
The approach is no different from what Hyundai has managed a few years with concepts like the series of the Heritage series – modern technology and superimposed style on a familiar silhouette.
Isuzu Thailand
Isuzu has not jumped on materials either. Most interior plastics have been exchanged for Alcantara, with additional carbon fillings and additional leather seat inserts to compose the feeling of superior quality. Since the concept is based on the version of the extended cabin (space cabin) of the truck, there is a little room behind the front seats, plus a bed of reasonable size at the rear to transport everything that is fans of nice retro trucks.
An appropriate power upgrade
The most important upgrades are mechanical. At the heart of the Dragon Max is the Maxforce Turbodiesel engine of 2.2 liters of Isuzu, the same modern unit recently introduced in the current D-Max and Mu-X models.
According to PaulThe engine was set to produce 217 hp (162 kW / 220 PS) and 550 Nm (406 LB-PI) of torque. It is a jump of 57 PS and 150 Nm on standard specifications, and more than double the output of the original TFR. The power supply is sent to the rear wheels thanks to a modern automatic transmission with eight speeds, which feels roughly correct for a part -time truck, partly the technological window.
The Dragon Max was revealed at Bangkok International Motor Share (BIMS), where it drew the attention of spectators. To accompany the unveiling, Isuzu published a video on the return theme that strikes the nostalgia button just right. You can check it below.
