The third generation GR86 would have joined the next Celica, MR2 and GR SUPRA in the range of sports cars of Toyota
–>
- The successor of the GR86 would be fully developed internally by Toyota.
- According to the latest reports, a Mazda engineer could be involved in the project.
- The next coupé will retain the FR layout, although it can rise on new foundations.
Toyota Gazoo Racing has a lot on his plate for the coming years, with large plans which include the return of the Celica and an MR2 successor with an intermediate engine. One might think that these models would make the GR86 feel redundant, but surprisingly, Toyota does not intend to kill the affordable RWD sports coupe. In fact, new reports suggest that there is already a new generation in progress.
The original Toyota 86 made its debut at the end of 2011 and was replaced by the GR86 in 2020. Since this calendar, it is reasonable to expect the third generation could happen towards the end of the decade, some Japanese sources pointing around 2027 as a probable launch year.
Bye-bye Subaru, hello Mazda?
In a significant difference compared to the previous models, which have been developed jointly with Subaru which appointed its BRZ version, the next GR86 should be developed internally by Toyota. It looks like a courageous movement, given the narrowing market of sports cars and expanding programming under Gazoo Racing. But this is where it becomes interesting: Toyota could borrow talents from Mazda, taking advantage of their solid relationship to call on a Mazda engineer to direct the project.

The rumor on the engineer Mazda comes from the Japanese publication Mag X. According to them, the new generation GR86 will be built on a new light platform, keeping the same front arrangement with rear motor and rear traction which made the family 86 a favorite. Toyota briefly entertained the idea of an average engine configuration, but finally abandoned these plans in favor of sticking to a more traditional approach.
Previous reports of Best car suggested that Toyota could base the new GR86 on a modified version of the Lexus IS platform, which would line up with rumors with rear drive.

A new GR motorcycle group
If this is true, it means that it came out with the 2.4 -liter boxer engine with natural suction of Subaru and with something new. The sources suggest that the next GR86 will use a motorcycle group developed by Toyota, most likely shooting the three turbocharged cylinders of 1.6 liter found in the Gr Yaris and Gr Corolla. This engine, seen in the concept the GR86 Rally Legacy in Sema, launches 300 hp (224 kW / 304 PS), making it a serious competitor for the new generation sports coupe.
However, do not expect all -wheel drive here, because Toyota seems determined to keep intact the rear traction character of the car. But do not yet exclude hybrid technology; It is possible that the three -cylinder engine can obtain hybrid assistance, which would increase both power and efficiency.

Another option envisaged for the GR86 is the new TOYOTA Turbocharged four -cylinder engine, which has made its debut in the GR Yaris M concept with a medium engine at the Auto Tokyo 2025 Salon. This engine should fuel the next successors of the Celica and MR2, producing 296 hp (221 kW / 300 PS) in its most basic route.
What will it look like?
Until now, Toyota has been tightened on the design, and we have not seen any sketches or camouflaged prototypes. However, we have taken a chance to predict what the new generation GR86 might look like.

Our illustration combines familiar proportions with aggressive GR aerodynamic components and fresh style indices borrowed from the Toyota Crown Sport. The lowered silhouette of the GR86 presents a hammer before hammer design, supplemented by contributions from sports bumpers, a sculpted profile and a more pronounced rear end.
Inside, the car should maintain its arrangement of 2 + 2 seats, with a practical rear hatch and an updated dashboard design.

The delicate part for the creators of Toyota will make the GR86 stands out from its brothers and sisters Gazoo Racing, like the Celica, MR2 and Supra. Each of these models must respond to another group of buyers, and the GR86 will probably be the most affordable in the group, positioned as a competitor of the next Mazda MX-5.
