Chinese car manufacturer BYD launched the Ling Yuan system, which adds a drone reception station on the roof of its vehicles. The new optional feature allows owners to capture air shots and videos of their trip and will be at ¥ 16,000 ($ 2,200).
The drone mounted on the roof was previewed by the Yangwang U8 SUV in 2023, but the first model to obtain it – optional – is the more affordable BAO 8 SUV under the Fang Cheng Bao brand. The company wishes to make high technology functionality accessible to a wider audience, which means that it will be available for several brands belonging to Byd.
More
The Ling Yuan system has been developed in collaboration with the Chinese drone manufacturer DJI. It includes a 4K drone and a reception station, covering an area of 0.29 m2 (3.1 square feet) on the roof of the vehicle. This drone hangar has an aerodynamic shape and measures 215 mm (8.5 inches) high.
By pressing a button, the device opens its doors and lifts its platform, allowing the drone to take off. This process can take place even in motion, at speeds up to 25 km / h (16 mph). Then, the drone is able to follow the “mother vessel” at speeds of up to 54 km / h (34 MPH), capturing images of the surrounding area.

When the shot is finished, the drone returns to the hangar mounted on the roof, where it automatically loads. According to the company, a burden of 20 to 80% lasts 30 minutes, so the occupants do not have to wait long before the next flight.
The drone can be controlled directly from the vehicle infotainment display or via the Ling Yuan application available for smartphones. In addition, AI software facilitates the organization and modification of images, so that it can be shared on your favorite social media platform.
In addition to the Yangwang U8 and the Fang Cheng Bao 8, other models that have already been shown with the system on their roofs include the Fang Cheng Bao 5, Titanium 3, Denza N9, Byd Tang L and Byd Senerion 07 DM-I. This list should grow more in the future, with additional models.
Currently, it is not clear if byd plans to offer the Ling Yuan system to other markets outside China.
