  • BYD’s executive vice-president says they will decide in 18-24 months.
  • The first two factories of the Chinese brand will have a combined production capacity of 500,000 units.
  • The EU imposed an additional rate of 17.4% on byd in October from last year.

Last year, the BYD group sold an impressive 4.27 million electric vehicles and PHEVs worldwide, establishing itself as one of the largest car manufacturers in the world. Not only are its vehicles incredibly popular throughout its domestic market in China, but its international presence continues to grow, especially in Europe. Not wanting to rest on his laurels, Byd reflects on an expansion of more in -depth production on the old continent.

During a recent interview in Germany, the executive vice-president of Byd, Stella Li, revealed that during the next 18 to 24 months, the company will decide if it needs a third manufacturing plant in Europe. If it goes forward with a new factory, it would further strengthen its presence on the market and allow the brand to bypass the recently applied EU prices.

Last October, the EU imposed an additional 17.4% tariff on Byd after a long investigation into the way the Chinese government provided subsidies to local car manufacturers. This additional rate is aimed at the 10% of existing import duties on cars and removes part of the competitive price advantage that Byd has on many of its competitors. This is where European plants will come into play.

Li has provided no indication as to where a third potential production site could be located while speaking with the media, reports Reuters.

Byd is currently building a large factory in Hungary which is expected to start operations later this year. This site may produce up to 350,000 electric vehicles and PHEV per year. Last year, byd also accepted an agreement of $ 1 billion to set up a manufacturing site in Türkiye. This slightly smaller factory will have the capacity to build 150,000 vehicles per year and should create around 5,000 jobs when production begins in late 2026.
