  • The Toyota Gr division plans to use a 2.0 -liter turbo hybrid engine in future models.
  • Electrification will allow sports cars to be more fuel economical and have lower emissions.
  • The engines developed by Gazoo Racing will also be used in traditional Toyota models.

Toyota has long been at the forefront of hybrid technology, starting with the original Prius in 1997. But the company does not stop at the sedans and consumer fuel crosses, because it also plans to bring electrification to its sports cars, with the help of the Toyota Gazoo Racing division.

A new four -cylinder turbocharged four -cylinder engine of 2.0 liters currently under development will feed future electrified GR models. It is designed to accommodate both traditional rechargeable hybrid and hybrid configurations, with a shorter piston race and a light construction that improve the efficiency of the packaging.

The GR Yaris M prototype with a medium engine, which made its debut in Tokyo earlier this year and would serve as a test bench for the next generation MR2, currently has the new 2.0 -liter motorcycle group in its non -electrified form. However, Hiroyuki Yamada, the engineer of Gazoo Racing supervising the project, confirmed plans to add hybrid assistance in the future.

Talk to CoachYamada said: “We can use a hybrid for future cars with this engine”. He added that this technology will be used in motorsport activities and passenger cars, because Toyota needs a more thrifty fuel engine with lower emissions for future GR products.

Electric electricity electrified for GR models

Currently, the GR Yaris and GR Corolla are powered by a 1.6 -liter turbocharged three -cylinder engine, while the GR86 uses a boxer engine based on a natural suction of 2.4 liters. The transition to an electrified Turbo 2.0 -liter electrified motorcycle group would allow Toyota to meet stricter emission standards in regions like Europe.

The same 2.0 -liter engine is defined to supply the coming versions of the Celica, MR2 and GR SUPRA, probably in various pieces with or without hybrid assistance. The first reports suggest that the engine could produce up to 395 hp (294 kW / 400 PS) in civilian models and up to 592 hp (441 kW / 600 PS) in the race configurations, although it is not clear if these figures include an electrical increase in the engine.

From the Toyota Gr range to consumer models

Toyota’s electrification efforts will not stop with performance cars. The new 1.5 -liter and 2.0 -liter four -cylinder engines developed by the engineers of Gazoo Racing will eventually make their way in more conventional models, such as new generation Yaris, Corolla and Rav4.

Bart Eelen, head of Toyota Gazoo Racing and Motorsports, confirmed this direction in an interview with Magazine Automobile. He explained: “It comes back to Toyota’s idea to use motorsport as a test bench and as a means of developing new things. I think this is something that Koyoda has introduced into the company. Toyota had not thought in this way before.

Eelen added: “The new ice engines are quite rare these days, but we really wanted to do it. The block is super compact and the center of gravity is super low – and the engine combines both efficiency and performance. »»

As for what comes then, we hope that Toyota will soon give us more details on the GR electrified models and the broader future of its hybrid performance technology.
