  • Toyota and Subaru work on a pair of electric vehicles, for sale in Japan, Europe and the United States.
  • The SUV twins with zero emission should compete in the compact SUV segment.
  • Subaru would undertake the production of electric vehicles in Japan, from January 2026.

The Toyota BZ4X has just received an update from the living environment which could soon be reflected by the Subaru Solterra closely linked. However, the multisgments will not be the only twins EV of Toyota and Subaru, because they would be joined by a pair of compact SUVs in 2026.

In order to reduce R&D costs, new models should share components with the BZ4X and Solterra based on E-TNGA, such as batteries and electric motors. The projects developed jointly have significant advantages of economy for both parties, which allows them to direct precious design and engineering resources to other models.

Plus: the new Toyota C-HR + EV can be launched in the United States next year

Earlier this week, Toyota shared a teaser of three new electric vehicles that will make its debut by 2026, joining the BZ4X, the C-HR + and the urban cruiser. Two of them seem to be the production versions of the concepts of Pipk-up EPU (Middle lower) and Land Cruiser is (bottom right) from 2023. This makes us believe that the third EV (bottom left) could be the compact SUV developed jointly by Toyota and Subaru.

If this is true, new electric vehicles will adopt a more conventional SUV position compared to the aforementioned crossings. In fact, the profile looks like the next Toyota Rav4, with a pointed nose, roof rails and a vertical tail. Judging by BZ4X and Solterra, the Toyota and Subaru compact versions will probably share most of their external and interior designs. However, a unique design front for each brand could help buyers distinguish them.

As indicated by the best car, new electric vehicles will be sold in Japan, Europe and the United States, expanding the zero emission ranges of Toyota and Subaru in the Compact SUV segment.

Unlike the Toyota BZ4X and the Subaru Solterra which are produced in the Toyota Motomachi factory, the new electric SUV developed in conjunction will be manufactured at the Subaru Yajima factory in Japan. According to a previous report from Nikkei, production will start in January 2026.

While Toyota already offers three electric vehicles (BZ4X, CH-R + and Urban Cruiser) in Europe, Solterra remains the only zero emission offer in the world of Subaru. However, this is about to change, the upcoming SUV being one of the four EV launches by Subaru in collaboration with Toyota.

In addition to the models developed jointly, Subaru plans to introduce its first EV developed internally in 2028. All these launches will contribute to the ambitious objective of Bevs representing half of the world sales of Subaru by 2030.
