  • Nissan has filed the name of Primera on several markets, including Malaysia.
  • An electric sedan could help Nissan challenge Tesla Model 3 and VW ID. 7
  • The company is committed to launching 30 new models in the coming years.

Nissan faces serious financial challenges these days, so much so that he recently led to the resignation of his CEO. The Japanese company is fighting to stay afloat, but a recent brand registered in Southeast Asia suggests that the brand could have an old tip in its sleeve – rethinking a model forgotten for a long time.

The name of Primera has made a surprising reappearance in fresh brand files on several markets, including Malaysia. A screenshot of the folder, shared with us by Cold cutsDisplays a submission date of February 13 and lists the pending status.

If it is quite possible that Nissan simply covers his bases by protecting the rights on an old name, he could also indicate a plan to resuscitate the Primera, something that would be a little more daring and more interesting than what we could expect.

A look back on the Primera

The Nissan Primera was initially introduced in 1990 as a medium -sized Nissan sedan for Japan and Europe. It was followed by a second generation in 1996 and a third in 2001. The final iteration, which drew attention to its eccentric design and its “futuristic” interior, was in production until 2007, when it was interrupted without any direct successor.

During its three generations, the Primera was available in a range of body styles, including a four -door sedan, a five -door liftback and a wagon. The car was also found under the spotlight in the late 90s when a second generation sedan won the BTCC championship in 1998 and 1999.

The Primera was mainly sold in Japan, Europe and the United Kingdom, while a sedan variant was marketed in North America under the name of the Infiniti G20 from 1990 to 2002, before being replaced by the G35.

In Europe, the Primera faced competitors like the VW Passat, Ford Mondeo, Opel Vectra, Mazda6, Toyota Avensis, Renault Laguna and Peugeot 406. However, as the SUVs started to dominate, many of these models have been deleted, with the exception of the Passat, which, like a tilt uncle, refused to do it.

Should Nissan bring him back?

In March 2024, Nissan undertook to introduce no less than 30 new models by 2026, including 14 combustion cars and 16 fully electric vehicles. However, a few months later, he said that some of these models could be delayed. Be that as it may, the teaser they published alluded to a diversified range, ranging from SUVs and microphones to the Hayons, the Coupés, to the Casins and the Mini-Pourgunnettes.

Of these 30 models, six are intended for Europe and five for Japan. So, if Nissan is seriously planning to relaunch the Primera, this could be integrated into one of these categories.

The idea of relaunching the Primera as a ice sedan seems to be a little stretched, to say the least, especially in Europe, where the sedans are about as popular as rotary phones. In addition, to slap the name of Primera on an SUV would not make much sense, since Nissan already has full hands with Juke, Qashqai and X-Trail.

A Chinese EV?

However, there is a more interesting and viable possibility: what happens if Nissan envisages an all-electric premium to compete with the tastes of Tesla Model 3, Mazda 6e or Volkswagen Id.7? It’s not out of the question. After all, Nissan could save a lot of money by sharing platforms, perhaps using the Chinese Specc Nissan Nissan Nissan Dongen as a base.

This decision would be similar to Mazda’s strategy with the Mazda 6th, which is based on the Deepal SL03 sedan produced by the Chinese Mazda partner Changan. The Mazda Electric 6th should be launched in Europe later this year. So, if Nissan wants to enter the action of the electric sedan without reinventing the wheel, it could be their best movement.
