The data too often falls into bad hands these days and the Alliance for Automotive Innovation has used it as the main reason why third -party repair workshops should not have access to data in order to repair cars. However, a federal judge rejected the group’s challenge on Tuesday and rejected his case. Although the fight is not finished with regard to the right to repair cars in independent stores, this marks the progress of the movement.

This whole story began in 2020 when the Massachusetts adopted a bill allowing third -party access for independent car stores. The bill has also made the obligation to speak to car buyers of their ability to serve their vehicles outside the brand network. The alliance challenged the law almost immediately.

According to Reuters, they said that it would degrade the security already in place for car manufacturers and consumers. In addition, the group of lobbyists believes that the new bill could also raise federal laws. On the other hand, the State argued that the law allows car manufacturers to buy all this data through a standardized third party which could maintain the same level of security currently available without creating a higher risk for the public or violate federal laws.

Of course, what the alliance for automotive innovation seems to forget is that the data is there even when third parties do not have access. The automotive industry as a whole seems to be grouped together with security defects. Although the solution is certainly not “gives everyone the keys to the kingdom”, it is not “nor to lock everyone in the kingdom but the kings”. In addition, car manufacturers already share sensitive data and access points with locksmiths.

The case began in 2021 with a totally different judge before being transferred to judge Denise Casper, who rejected him. For the moment, the decision is sealed to give both parties the possibility of involving information to be found. The Alliance for Automotive Innovation says that it plans to call on the case.
