  • Under Florida law, you can be imprisoned for six months to damage a tree on private property.
  • Police said Yanelly Guzman should have left her contact details on a note attached to the tree.
  • While the authorities have abandoned the charge of flight offense, Guzman has to pay thousands of legal costs.

No matter how experienced you are driving, chances are you had a minor running -in with a post in a parking lot, the edge of your garage, or – if you were really unlucky – another vehicle. But for a woman with coral cape, in Florida, a recent brush with a tree during parking made her be stopped and accused of flight offense in what must be one of the most stupid excessive reactions of the application of law in recent memory.

The incident occurred the day before Christmas while Yanelly Guzman parked before his quarter of work at TJ Maxx. As she entered a place, she felt an unexpected pressure on the roof of her Toyota Rav4. Recalling, she realized that her pillar had cut off a branch of low trees, a boring but otherwise forgetable incident that could (and probably) arrived at many people.

Her colleagues advised her to contact the CAPE Coral police service so that she can submit an insurance request to pay the damage. In what looks like a sketch of the episode of Saturday Night Live, a policeman apparently told Guzman that she should have left her name, her car recording number and her phone number in a note attached to the ‘TREE. Yes, really.

Of course, in the great tradition of Florida which makes the headlines for all the bad reasons, this minor accident has somehow transformed into a real arrest. The officer placed Guzman in police custody, accusing him of flight offense. She was reserved in prison and only released after paying a deposit of $ 150. But it was only the start of his problems.

Addressing Wect 6, Guzman says that she cannot eat properly or sleep well after the traumatic incident. Not only that, but it must pay about $ 4,300 in legal costs and repairs for its RAV4.

Fortunately, common sense has prevailed – event. The state prosecutor’s office abandoned the charges after determining that there was no real evidence that she had struck the tree. Oddly, someone who strikes a tree on private property and leaves the scene in Florida can be imprisoned for up to six months.

“I was crying and crying because I am a person who has never had any problems,” Guzman told Wect 6. “I don’t think it’s just what they did to me. They ruined my life.

The lesson here? If you ever pay a tree in Florida, you better treat it as a high -level crime scene. To cite, call a forensic team, perhaps even hold a candlelit vigil for the affected branch. And to make a good measure, save your confession to the trunk, preferably notarial. Otherwise, you might simply find yourself explaining to a judge why you “fled the scene” with botanical success.
